COVID-19 is the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that emerged in December 2019. Coronaviruses are a group of related viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, coronaviruses cause respiratory tract infections ranging from mild to lethal.
